Tesla Drops Price of P85D Ludicrous Upgrade, Will Not Have Exact Performance as P90D

Tesla began taking preorders for its P85D Ludicrous Mode upgrade last month at a price of $7,500. But just a short month later, word from Buttermd out of the Tesla forum indicates that the company has reduced the price of the Ludicrous retrofit from $7,500 to $5,000. But to some some P85D owners, the announcement also comes with a bit of a surprise – a Ludicrous equipped P85D will not have the exact performance as a P90D.

According to forum user Buttermd, Tesla sent the following email to P85D owners that have pre-ordered the Ludicrous Mode retrofit.

“Thank you for your interest in the Tesla Model S Ludicrous retrofit.

As a result of continued improvement on the parts and processes needed to raise the max current from 1300 Amps (Insane) to 1500 Amps (Ludicrous), we are pleased to announce a reduction in the price of the Ludicrous retrofit from $7,500 to $5,000.

The upgrade represents an estimated 10% increase in power over the already insane P85D and provides a 0.2 second improvement over both the 0-60 mph and the quarter mile time versus the performance of your current Model S. Please note the retrofit does not offer the exact performance spec as a new P90D.

The Ludicrous retrofit is available to all P85D customers with original vehicle orders placed before 11am PST Friday 7/17/15. These cars will receive updated badging to P85D with an ‘underline’ to denote the Ludicrous upgrade.

The retrofit will be initially available at the Fremont Service Center with additional Service Center hubs rolling out in early 2016. If your local Service Center is not one of the prioritized hubs, you may alter your preferred location once the list of Retrofit Service Centers has been announced by emailing OnlineOrders@teslamotors.com. The retrofit must be done on site at a Tesla Service Center and cannot be performed by the Ranger Service.

To confirm your retrofit, click the link below to place your order. The pre-order deposit is non-refundable and will be applied to the final cost at the Service Center. When placing your deposit, please remember to enter your VIN and select a Service Center location from the drop-down menu on the Cart page. Please note, the retrofit must be done on site at a Tesla Service Center and cannot be performed by the Ranger Service.

If you have already placed your deposit, then no further action is required at this time.”
