SpaceX proposed a $1.5 billion investment to bring Starlink to Vietnam.

The Vietnamese government briefly mentioned SpaceX’s Starlink proposal, revealing details from a meeting between aerospace company’s Senior Vice President Tim Hughs and the Vietnam’s Communist Party General Secretary To Lam.

Hughs and Lam discussed the potential benefits of Starlink connectivity during national disasters like Super Typhoon Yagi. Earlier this month Yagi left 300 Vietnamese people dead and $1.6 billion worth of property destroyed. Vietnam was hit by a second intense storm a few weeks after Yagi, causing floods.

Hughes expressed SpaceX’s concern over Typhoon Yagi’s aftermath and offered the company’s help in the form of Starlink services in the future. Communication services are critical during national disasters, specifically for those who need rescue from flooded or damaged homes and homes.

Lam is currently in the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly. The General Secretary shared that Vietnam is reviewing SpaceX’s $1.5 billion proposal.

“Emphasizing that Vietnam identifies digital transformation as one of the important driving forces bringing the country into a new era, the General Secretary and President highly appreciated SpaceX Group’s investment proposal in Vietnam and expressed his hope that this would be a favorable first step to further promote cooperation between the two sides in the coming time.

“According to General Secretary and President To Lam, the Vietnamese Government is studying the Group’s proposal; requesting SpaceX to discuss and coordinate closely with relevant agencies as well as domestic partners to ensure efficiency in the process of completing investment preparation procedures,” stated Vietnam’s official website for the National Assembly.

Starlink is expanding its global reach and achieving milestones at lightning speed. In early September, SpaceX’s Starlink team announced that it had produced 1 million standard kits in the last ten months, suggesting that it was ramping production in Bastrop, Texas.

Vietnam and South Africa seem to be SpaceX’s next target for Starlink. Elon Musk met with South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this week. The President invited Musk to return home and invest in South Africa.
