Installing the Tesla Model S front license plate can range in difficulty depending on the method you choose.
Would-be buyers of the Model S are prompted with the option to either forego their front plate installation or have it factory installed at a Tesla Service Station. Those who have declined the factory installation have taken it upon themselves to come up with clever ways on how to best secure the front plate.
Ways to install the Tesla Model S front license plate
-

-
Zip Tie
Use zip ties to affix the front license plate to the plastic mesh surrounding the nose cone. This procedure is cheap, simple and can be done with a minimal time sink, thus making it the most popular method of installation.
-
Metal J Hook Mount
Can be achieved through hardware purchased from your local Home Depot or Lowes. The idea is to use a nuts and bolts approach by hooking the plate onto the mesh grill below the nose cone, and then fasten it down.
-
Magnetic Mount
We found this to be one of the more ingenious and practical ways to mount the front plate.
-
Factory installation (least popular)
By far the least popular method for installing the Tesla Model S front license plate since it entails drilling permanent holes into the plastic nose cone.
-
Motorized Retractable Plate
Definitely interesting to say the least, however we question the durability of the device especially when driving with the plate retracted. The mounting bracket would be exposed to extreme wind forces at highway speeds.
-
No Installation
Leave the Model S in its birthday suit. Either your state doesn’t require a front plate or you’re jut a kick ass rebel that scoffs at measly tickets. Either way we love it.
